ASSISTED LIVING EVACUATION

Why senior living facilities need specialised evacuation chairs

With the vulnerability of persons in care, be it the infirm, elderly or persons requiring supported living the fire evacuation procedures are paramount. We need to be prepared for any eventuality to get everyone out safely when it comes to evacuating Assisted Living Facilities and/or Nursing Homes.

Assisted living and senior care communities face unique challenges during emergencies. Residents often have limited mobility or cognitive awareness, making rapid evacuation without proper equipment almost impossible. A dedicated senior living evacuation chair ensures every resident can be moved quickly and safely down stairways during fires, power outages, or other emergencies.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and various state-specific fire safety laws (including California’s AB 3098) facilities must provide accessible means of egress for residents with mobility impairments. Installing evacuation chairs at every stairwell and ensuring staff are trained in their use is the simplest and most effective way to achieve compliance.

With the current unpredictable climate of terrorism and violence, along with fire and weather emergencies, effective emergency evacuation plans are vital. Extra precautions and considerations need to be taken into account to accommodate the individual needs of patrons or residents with physical disabilities, those with sensory disabilities, and those who may lack understanding of a situation or be able to act quickly. Personnel and visitors with disabilities also need protection AND a plan.

This plan should insure and include:

• Full risk identification and prevention
• Drills (identifying obstacles as they arise and before an emergency occurs)
• Equipment required and its usage
• Training needs
• Post drill evaluation to inform any changes necessary etc.

Staff and visitors with disabilities can also be at risk. Assisted/senior living and/or nursing home administrators and staff should develop a plan to necessitate provisions and share the information with all people concerned. Through the entire process, the establishment has a moral, ethical and legal responsibility to keep their whole community safe in the event of an emergency.

Evac+Chair’s range of evacuation chairs is widely used across U.S. nursing homes, residential care facilities, and assisted living communities. Each model is designed for single-operator use. This means one staff member can evacuate a resident safely without heavy lifting. This is crucial for maintaining dignity, reducing injury risk, and ensuring compliance with federal and state safety regulations.
